 Recently, Yiwei Lithium energy released 628Ah energy storage cell, triggering the industry discussion on the era of energy storage cells. In 2024, what are the concerns of large capacity energy storage cells?


■ 300Ah + mass production offline, 500Ah + race began


How many volumes are the energy storage large capacity cells? According to incomplete statistics, a total of 23 enterprises released 40 types of 30300Ah + cells in 2023, and 14 were announced for mass production in 2023, mainly in Q3-Q4 mass production, half of which is 314Ah.


 At the time of mass production of 314Ah, 500 + Ah cell race began: Ningde Times started the construction of 530Ah energy storage cell production line at the end of December; Yiwei Lithium Energy 560Ah Q2 global delivery and 628Ah mass production in October this year; Honeycomb Energy 660Ah and 710 Ah cell mass production in 2025; Xiongtao Stock launched 580Ah in May 2023, and the production capacity construction planning period is 3 years.

 Industry analysis points out that 500Ah + energy storage cell is more a test of enterprise safety design, production, manufacturing capacity, or will further bring the first, second or second and third line energy storage cell enterprise differentiation.


■ Is the ceiling of the large capacity cell 1130Ah?


 Large capacity battery cell has significant cost reduction advantages, which can bring better price competitiveness to manufacturers, which also drives energy storage battery manufacturers to start the capacity competition. Haichen Energy Storage released the MIC 1130Ah long-time energy storage cell at the end of 2023, which is four times the capacity of 280Ah battery, and also the largest capacity energy storage cell released. Haichen Energy Storage said it can help the energy storage DC side energy storage system by 25%. The cell will be delivered to the market in December 2024. In addition to haichen energy storage, will there be enterprises to launch the cell giant?


■ Which capacity is the predominant factor?


40300Ah + energy storage cells have 20 kinds of capacity cells, including 9314Ah, 5305Ah, 4320Ah, 3306Ah, 315Ah and 300Ah 2 each, the rest of 310Ah, 325Ah, 330Ah, 340Ah, 350Ah, 360Ah, 375Ah, 380Ah 1 each. So many capacity of the cells, who will become the standard?



■ Old size OR new specifications?


 At present, the large capacity cell mainly adopts two size paths: one is to use 280Ah size, using 71 * 173 square size, the cell capacity, most manufacturers in the market use this route; the other is to explore new specifications, such as the L500 type 325Ah energy storage in April 2023, thickness is only 21mm, 2 / 3 thinner than the current 280Ah energy storage cell, but longer length. The first way has high cell compatibility, which is conducive to system integration, but poses greater technical challenges to battery enterprises in heat dissipation, safety, manufacturing and cost.


 As the energy storage cells become bigger and bigger, will more energy storage enterprises explore new specifications suitable for large-capacity energy storage application scenarios?


■ 10,000 + cycle life as a benchmark?


 According to statistics, among the 40 energy storage large capacity cells, 25 have a cycle life of more than 10,000 times, accounting for more than half, of which 15 have more than 12,000 times. In 2024,10,000 + cycle life will become the industry benchmark (0.5C charging and discharging, 80% capacity retention rate).




 Wu Kai, chief scientist of Ningde Times, said in 2023, now many battery companies promise that they can achieve 20 years, 25 years, cycle life to 12,000 times, or even 15,000 times, how can customers and third parties detect these indicators? According to what criteria? None at now. All are verbal promises.


■ Who covers the security risk?


 The iteration of the large-capacity cell is a double-edged sword. Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said at the CIBF2023 conference that the explosive index of lithium iron phosphate in large-capacity batteries is twice that of ternary batteries.


The larger the cell, the more difficult it is to dissipate heat and ensure the consistency of the internal temperature of the cell, and the thermal runaway problem after the short circuit of the battery will be more prominent. But from another perspective, the trend of 300Ah + large capacity energy storage cells forces enterprises to improve the level of battery heat dissipation and safety technology.


■ A 20-foot 5 MWh + system based on 300Ah + cells is standard


 In 2023, energy storage battery manufacturers will focus on 300Ah + large capacity energy storage cells and 20-foot 5 MWh + energy storage system. According to experts' incomplete statistics, in 2023, more than 20 enterprises such as Ningde Times, CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, Ruipu Lanjun and Double Yili have launched 300Ah + large capacity energy storage special cell / 5 MWh + energy storage system.


 In October 2023, Xinwanda will launch the new generation of Super industrial and commercial energy storage system based on 314Ah large capacity cells, which is also the first product to apply new large capacity cells in industrial and commercial energy storage. Will more enterprises follow up in the future and apply 300Ah + large capacity cells to industrial and commercial energy storage?


■ How is the downstream market accepting of large capacity cells?


From the market end, the terminal has issued relevant procurement guidelines in 2023 due to the reduced use of components after the large-capacity cell composition system, which can have higher volume energy density and lower cost. Yi Ziqi, chief technology officer of Haichen Energy Storage, revealed that 280Ah and 314Ah are in a very balanced stage. From the perspective of projects, some projects willing to break through will choose 314Ah, while the more conservative ones will choose 280Ah to reject new products. As for 500Ah +, there is still some uncertainty about the acceptance of downstream customers.
